Contour Line Drawing is a technique used by artists that involves sketching the contour lines of a subject resulting in, essentially, an outline of the subject. Contour drawing is used to emphasize the mass and volume of a subject rather than its details.
Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist who became a preeminent figure in the visual art movement known as “Pop Art”. One of his most notable works is his silkscreen paintings Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962).
Pop Art makes use of aspects of mass culture, including: advertising, comic books, and mundane cultural objects. It aims to use images from popular culture as a way to accentuate the gaudy and cliché elements of any culture through the use of irony illustrated within each piece.
Prior to producing all kinds of works that varied many forms of artistic media, Andy Warhol’s illustrious career began with contour line drawings.
For this exercise we were asked to sketch contour line drawings of small trinkets that were brought in for us. To make the task more challenging, we were given an extra set of rules. The first rule requested that we draw with our non-dominant hands. The second asked us to complete each drawing without picking up our pencils, meaning we had to draw the object in one, continuous stroke.
Personally, I thought the paintbrush I had drawn was the best of all my contour line drawings.
Afterward we were told to choose one of our contour line drawings to upload to Photoshop, in order to enhance the piece by adding color and so forth.
